MUET ESSAY WRITING
AN OVERVIEW OF CO-CURICULAR ACTIVITIES / PROS AND CONS OF CO-CURICULAR ACTIVITIES AMONG STUDENTS

Our government had a great concern over the co-curicular activities as it benefits our country. It had been stated in the philosophy of education as to achieve Mission 2020 which we are not only developed in economy or physically but spiritually as well. Students will give more attention on activities beside the acadermic learning. Teacher will emphasis more on students' performance in co-curicular activities. This can help Malaysia to be transformed into a more balanced society and should be encouraged. thus, it had been set as one criteria to enter university.
First and foremost, the co-curicular activities provide the chances for student to have different experiences in different fields. Students would not only focus in the lesson in class but think out of the box as most activities carried out in co-curicular session requires critical thinking. students can experiencethe real world and not just theory, they have to apply what they learned in school in the real life. This can make a different in the perception of learning. They could learn in a more interactive and creative way by joiming the co-curicular activities. this can reverse braindrain in our country asthe younger generation can think and enhanced the concepts of life-long learning in our society.
Moreover, co-curicular activities help in character building among students as it emphasis on the moral values. Attending co-curicular activities build confident of students. For example, a student who join the English Language Club in school might give a speech or join the English forum and this make them to stand  a chance to express themselves in public. As the saying ' the children today the leaders tomorrow' . On the other hand, students can improve their socializing skill by taking part in certain co-curicular activities. They would meet new friends, form a study group or planning an activity on their free time. This indirectly reduce the risk of teenagers taking part in illegals activeites such as drug abuse. In the mean time, they could also learn organisation and management skills. They are trained to be responsible in their job. They would be able to handle a job well when study further in university.
However, one man's meat is another man's poison. This is a treat to those who are medically unfit . For example, a person who experience asthma cannot compete with those who are physically healthy. This is unfair to them as they might felt upset when they couldn't get the course in their tertiary education if they failed to gain good marks or perform well in co-curicular activities. In addition, it is a financial burden for those come from poor family. The students might force their parents in buying the equipment such as some musical instrument which might be unaffordable or expensive. It can become a bad competition among students as they tend to compare with each other. Those who are suffering might felt very stress and distress and this might cause the family to quarrel.
In addition, teacher might over emphasis on co-curicular activities and chances might not be distributed fairly. In my observation, teacher will give those who are good in academic to be the leaders in a club as they tend to assume that those good in acadermic can leads a club or group better than those who are not. This will kill the students' desire in becoming a leader. Moreover, student might spend too much time in attending the activities carried out and have no time to enjoy and rest. The time with family will also reduces andd as a result, the gap between family will enlarged with is very unhealthy to the growth of children.
As a conclusion, everything has its pros and cons, depending on the people do it. Co-curicular activities must carried in a proper and moderate manner to ensure its effectiveness.
